How to Clean Luxury Vinyl Flooring in Raleigh, NC, Homes

How to clean LVP Flooring

This guide shows you how to clean luxury vinyl flooring so the wear layer stays clear, the seams stay tight, and the floor still looks like the sample you picked. You do not need a special machine or a cabinet full of products. You need a soft vacuum, a barely damp mop, and a pH-neutral cleaner.

Below we cover how to clean LVP flooring room by room, whether a vacuum is safe, why we skip steam, and which products we keep off the floor. The notes come from what we see in Raleigh homes after install, not from a generic care card.

Why Raleigh Homes Need a Simple LVP Cleaning Routine

Grit is what dulls vinyl plank flooring, not the occasional spilled coffee. Raleigh pollen, red clay from yards in North Hills and Five Points, and sand from the Neuse River Greenway all ride in on shoes. Once that grit sits under a chair leg, it acts like sandpaper on the wear layer.

Wake County humidity adds a second issue. A soaked mop does not “deep clean” LVP. It pushes water toward the joints. In a crawl-space home near Glenwood South or a slab ranch in West Raleigh, that extra moisture has nowhere helpful to go. A damp pass is enough.

Can You Vacuum LVP Floors?

Yes. You can use a vacuum on vinyl plank flooring, and you should. Dry soil is the first thing to remove. If you mop over it, you grind it in.

The best vacuum for LVP floors is a soft-brush or hard-floor setting with the beater bar turned off. A spinning brush roll can scuff the finish and catch plank edges, especially on a click-together floor. Canister vacs, stick vacs, and robot vacs all work when they have a hard-floor mode and a clean, soft brush.

Can you vacuum LVP floors every day? In a busy house with kids or dogs, yes. In a quieter home, two or three times a week is plenty if you also use a microfiber dust mop at the doors. Empty the bin often. Fine clay dust from Raleigh yards clogs filters fast and then the vac starts leaving a film.

Skip shop vacs with no floor brush.

How Do You Clean LVP Flooring Day to Day?

Here are seven things we recommend when someone asks how to clean LVP floors without turning Saturday into a project:

1. Sweep or vacuum before you mop

Start dry. Use a microfiber pad or the vacuum settings above. Pay extra attention to the kitchen sink, the slider to the deck, and the foyer. Those three spots collect the most grit in the homes we service around Raleigh, Cary, and Apex.

A cheap corn broom can scratch if the bristles are stiff. Soft bristles or a flat dust mop are kinder to the wear layer.

2. Use a pH-neutral cleaner made for vinyl

How to clean LVP flooring the right way is almost boring. Mix a pH-neutral vinyl cleaner in a spray bottle or a mop tank, wring the pad until it is just damp, and work in sections. Rinse the pad when it looks gray. Dirty pads spread soil, they do not lift it.

We still like Bona’s luxury vinyl formulas for this, and we tell people to check the EPA Safer Choice label if they want a second opinion on ingredients. You do not need shine additives. The floor already has a factory finish.

3. Do not steam clean LVP

Steam clean LVP is one of the most common searches we hear after a new install, and our answer is no. The plank surface can handle a splash. The joints and the subfloor cannot handle pressurized vapor. Steam drives moisture down the seams, which can swell a wood subfloor, stain the edges, or loosen click locks.

If a listing or a gadget box says “safe for sealed floors,” ignore it for LVP unless the plank manufacturer says steam is approved in writing. Most of the lines we sell, including COREtec and Gemcore, ask you to skip steamers and steam mops.

4. Put the right mats at the door

A coarse outdoor mat on the porch and a washable indoor mat just inside the door catch clay before it hits the planks. Avoid rubber-backed mats that do not breathe. They can trap moisture and leave a shadow on the floor, especially in a humid July in Wake County.

Felt pads under chairs and felt or nylon glides under dining chairs save more finish than any cleaner. Replace pads when they pick up grit. Dirty pads scratch too.

5. Wipe spills when they happen

Standing water is the enemy, even on a waterproof core. Wipe pet bowls, HVAC condensate drips, and the fridge line as soon as you see them. Use a soft cloth. If something sticky dries, a damp pad and a little extra dwell time beat scrubbing.

6. Keep harsh chemicals off the wear layer

Vinegar, bleach, ammonia, oil soap, and “mop and shine” products all cause problems. Vinegar is acidic. Bleach can haze the finish. Soap leaves a film that looks like the floor will not come clean. Wax is not part of LVP care. You cannot buff it off later without damaging the wear layer.

7. Replace a damaged plank instead of coating over it

Deep gouges, burns, and swollen edges do not clean out. On a floating floor we can often take the row apart from the wall and swap the plank. That is why we tell homeowners to keep a carton after install. It is cheaper than trying to recaulk or polish a wound that will always show.

How to Clean LVP Flooring in Kitchens, Baths, and Mudrooms

Kitchens usually need more frequent cleaning, but that doesn’t mean you need to soak the floor. Cooking grease and grime can build up around the stove and under stools. A quick weekly damp mop with a clean pad is usually enough.

If you have a dog bowl sitting on LVP in your Raleigh mudroom, place a tray underneath it. LVP can handle everyday splashes, but you don’t want water sitting around the seams or joints.

LVP also works well in bathrooms when it’s properly installed and the room has good ventilation. After a shower, run the fan and wipe up any water around the tub or shower area. Just because the flooring is waterproof doesn’t mean you should leave it sitting in a steamy, wet room for hours.

Sunrooms and west-facing rooms can collect dust a little faster, especially with all that sunlight coming in. Give those areas a quick dust mop more often to keep the floor looking clean.

Vinyl Plank Flooring That Stays Easier to Live With

Cleaning is simpler when the plank was a good fit from day one. A thicker wear layer, a rigid SPC or WPC core, and a texture that is not aggressively embossed all hide daily life better.

You can compare constructions on our luxury vinyl flooring page, then browse the full luxury vinyl flooring catalog.

In the showroom we regularly walk people through COREtec, Duchateau, Engineered Floors, Gemcore, Innova, Mohawk, Masland, and Stanton vinyl programs. Some look like white oak. Some look like stone. The care routine above stays the same. What changes is how much texture holds onto dust.

Quality Flooring Installation Makes Cleaning Easier

The way your flooring is installed can make a big difference when it comes to cleaning. Uneven spots, raised edges, or gaps between planks can trap dirt and dust where a mop can’t reach. When the floor is flat and the planks fit together properly, dirt and debris are much easier to sweep or mop away.

That’s why good flooring installation matters long after the job is finished. A properly installed floor not only looks better, but it’s also easier to keep clean.

Our flooring services team can help with the whole process, from choosing your flooring and reviewing samples to installation and cleanup. We work with homeowners, interior designers, home builders, and real estate agents throughout Wake, Orange, and Chatham counties.

Looking for Flooring Options for Other Rooms?

It’s common to have more than one type of flooring in your home. For example, you might have LVP in the kitchen, hardwood flooring in the dining room, and tile near the entry. That mix can look great, but each flooring type needs a little different care.

Use the right cleaner for each surface, and avoid using the same mop pad everywhere. A pad that was used on your LVP could pick up residue or dirt that you don’t want to spread onto oil-finished hardwood or grout.

FAQ

Yes, as long as the brush roll is off or you are on a hard-floor setting. Daily vacuuming is helpful in foyers and kitchens. It is not required in a low-traffic guest room. Soft wheels and a clean brush matter more than the brand name on the vac.

No. Speed does not fix the problem. Steam is still pressurized moisture at the joints. Use a damp microfiber pad instead. If you already steamed the floor and see peaked edges, call us before the damage spreads.

For most Raleigh-area homes we see in 2026, professionally installed LVP typically lands around $6 to $11 per square foot, depending on the plank, the wear layer, furniture moves, and how much prep the subfloor needs. A straightforward bedroom can sit near the lower end. A whole main floor with leveling, transitions, and old floor removal sits higher. We quote after we see the rooms, because crawl-space homes and slab homes do not prep the same way.

On the vinyl wall you will see COREtec, Duchateau, Engineered Floors, Gemcore, Innova, Mohawk, Masland, and Stanton, along with other lines we bring in for specific jobs. We also carry hardwood, tile, and carpet from names such as Hallmark Floors, Anderson Tuftex, Armstrong, Bruce, American Olean, and Daltile. If you have a brand in mind, ask. If it is a fit for the house, we will get it.

In a typical Raleigh kitchen, a damp mop once a week is enough, with spot wipes as needed. High-traffic hallways can use a second pass. If the pad comes up clean, you can wait. If it comes up gray on the first room, keep going and rinse the pad.
